Having the support of others when we are working to achieve our goals is crucial. Coaches, teachers, mentors, employers and others can help us get to our destination. However, others’ support and guidance won’t make a difference if we are not actively engaged in the pursuit of our goals. According to Williams & Krane “a high level of competency and autonomy can yield better results” (2021). Whether you are looking to be promoted, trying to improve a skill, training for a big competition, or striving to be the best parent you can be, taking ownership of your journey is the key to success.
Here are 7 benefits of taking ownership of your process. It increases:
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Efficacy
- Confidence
- Self-trust
- Resilience
- Well-being
- Adaptability
It is easy to blame external factors for our lack of motivation or success. But we have more control than we think. Owning our process requires that we understand what is within our control and what is not. So today, take a few minutes to reflect on what you can actually control and identify the factors that will give you a greater sense of autonomy and accountability.
- Make a list of the different areas of your life (e.g. academics, work, relationships, physical activity, etc.)
- On a scale of 1 to 10, rate how much control you feel you have in each area.
- Identify the aspects/factors that are within your control in each area.
- Redo step 2 to see if your rating has changed.
